Social Prescription’s Power - A TEDx Talk

Working within the Houston Methodist hospital system and America's ER, Dr. Anita Bangale is a Houston, Texas emergency physician who also coaches clients on issues such as depression and anxiety. In a late 2022 TEDx talk in Raleigh, Dr. Anita Bangale addressed the topic "Fine Tuning our Mental Health-The Power of Social Prescription."

She looks at the restorative importance of music and other art forms and creative communication for ER patients and providers. In the UK, Canada, and Australia, it is common to offer "social prescription" as a treatment strategy that embraces the concept of using the arts and exposure to nature to achieve lasting patient wellness.

An example for Dr. Bangale would be a physician prescribing a "weekly dose of dance." This would make her (as a patient) feel elated, not only because she loves to dance but because it would provide the chance to connect with others with a similar passion.

While such a prescription, at face value, seems like a retread of what people already do, in many cases, it is not. In today's deadline-driven world, such activities are what people would choose to do if they had more time. It is the human need for socialization and companionship that those in the medical system can better visualize and provide pathways for patients.
